Cloverfield, The Mist, Sweetney Todd, I must say, are the few movies that ought to be glamoured with 5 stars rating and global award nominations.
Let's talk about Cloverfield first. So what made this movie a hit?
First was the viral marketing that stirred up curiosity and of course, the participation of the interested parties. By engaging people in the mystery, it created, in layman term, a sense of belonging. People felt that they are part of the movie and they began anticipating...
The marketing plan was a success.
Of course the art direction was good, the animation was realistic, and the actors were amazing.
We felt like we were there.
The movie plot
The multi-billion worth Japanese Corporation was involved in a deep sea drilling project. Apparantly, the supersonic sound that was released during the drilling process affected many sea creatures' operational lives.
The origin of the monster is unknown. Some claim that it already existed in the deep sea, the supersonic sound forced it to surface. Some say they saw something fall in the sea in the last scene where the lead was on the ferris wheel - some claim that it was the fragment of the satellite the Japanese Corporation owned.
It was deduced that the fragment, containing radioactive substance, reacted with a whale and caused the mutation.
Why is it sick?
I was referring to the people in the movie. People, involving themselves in exploitation, and resulting such a devastating outcome of a city.
Are people, not sick at all?
Back to The Mist. Why is it a hit?
Stephen King is an amazing writer, and the actors were superb! The show probes you to think.
The movie plot
King was trying to contrast the "monsters" in the supermarket with the monsters out there.
Why is it sick?
Once again, I was referring to the people in the story. People, in times of survival, are extremely volatile and deadly. (As illustrated in the movie) People were willing to kill (the soldier), and to point fingers (never at themselves).
Are people, not sick?
Sweetney Todd! What makes it a hit?
A beautiful musical. The actors were gold.
The movie plot
A man, crazed, in the thoughts of revenge. Deluded that all people in London, deserves to die.
Why is it sick?
A man who thought,
because of his tragedy,
could kill for justice?
A man, who pities himself,
who thought he was the only sane one,
could kill to save mankind.
A man, who thought he was sane,
was lost in the symphony of revenge and self pity,
he killed his wife
in the fit of anger.
A man,
is that man,
not sick at all?
