Last year, on March 31st, for exactly an hour,Sydney made a powerful statement to challengeglobal warming, by turning off its lights.

This was known as EARTH HOUR.
Created to take a stand against the greatestthreat our planet has ever faced, Earth Hour
uses the simple action of turning off the lights forone hour to deliver a powerful message aboutthe need for action on global warming.

Over 2.2 million Sydney residents and over2,100 businesses participated in the event andelectricity consumption was claimed to havebeen reduced by 10.2% for that hour.

What began as one city taking a stand againstglobal warming caught the attention of theworld, and all it took was just sixty minutes.

This year, 24 global cities will participatein Earth Hour at 8pm on March 29.
So, what's the significance of it?
"Earth Hour is the highlight of a campaign to encouragebusinesses, communities and individuals to take thesimple steps needed to cut their emissions on an ongoingbasis. It is about simple changes that will collectivelymake a difference – from businesses turning off theirlights when their offices are empty, to homes turningoff appliances rather than leaving them on."
