Praying For Myanmar

A TRADEGY UNFOLDS

If you don't already know, two fridays ago,
cyclone Nargis hit the coast of Myanmar,
and devastated large parts of the low-lying
delta region of the Irrawaddy River.

Cyclone Nargis

The largest city, Yangon was battered for over
ten hours by the storm. Homes were flattened, more
sturdy structures damaged, trees uprooted and power
lines downed. In rural parts of the country up to
95 per cent of all homes were destroyed.

The Aftermath

The current death toll has been estimated to be
more than 100,000 and up to 1 million people have
been displaced from the aftermath of the storm.

1 Million And Counting...

Come watch this video clip, filmed by Al Jazeera,
as they bring you live footages from the affected
areas and report on the situation in Myanmar.

The current situation isn't looking rosy and ten days
on, rescue efforts are still having trouble gaining access
to affected areas as well as the flow of aid which is being
impeded by the government's intervention.

The Red Cross

We can only hope for a quick resolution to
ending this terrible crisis and pray for the people
of Burma as they go through this difficult time.

ED08 - Night Light Dazzle

A QUESTION!

Have you ever wondered what the Earth
would look like from space? If you were an
astronaut, and were looking down from
the heavens, what would you see?

Reflection

This is what the Earth looks like from
space when the sun goes down. Beautiful
isn't it? I would do anything to have one
chance to see this with my own eyes.

Night Light Dazzle

Can you guys spot Singapore?

Surprisingly, city lights make this task
quite possible. Human-made lights highlight
particularly developed or populated
areas such as the U.S. and Japan.

The relatively darker regions
cover most of the less developed or
unpopulated areas such as Africa.

Satellite In Space

Oh yes, if you didn't know, the image is
actually a composite of hundreds of pictures
made by orbitting NASA satellites.

And, i almost forgot!

Here's a video clip i found on youtube
showing the Earth revolving on its own axis
and giving a wonderful light show ;)

------------------------------------------------

WATCH THIS!

------------------------------------------------

AMAZING HUH?

Anyway, here are some more
zoomed in photos of the various
continents of our planet.

The U.S.A.

The United States Of America.
Apparently, it seems that the eastern seaboard
is much more populated than in the west.

Europe

Europe. Well, there's really nothing
much to say but the whole continent's
pretty much lighted up! Haha.

Africa

Africa. The continent is pretty much
dark because it is largely under-developed
with the exception of South Africa.

South East Asia

South East Asia. Who could forget SEA?
Notice Singapore being a bright yellow spark and
amazingly, the region around Bangkok too.

------------------------------------------------

AND, SO!

After viewing the wonderful light show,
you would probably ask, what does this
have anything to do with Earth Day?

Earth Day

Well, take it this way, these bright lights may dazzle
for all their worth, but the question is, for how long? As
we humans continue to squander our source of electricity,
it won't be long before we deplete our energy source.

Blackout!

So, the message i'm bringing forward today is
a simple one, save electricty, don't waste it!

Earth Day 2008

WE'RE SAVING GAIA

If you haven't been living under a rock for
the past few weeks, you definitely should know
that today, the world celebrates Earth Day!

Earth Day 2008

We all can't deny that the world is a wonderful place
to live in and we humans owe much of our existence
to this shining blue marble of ours and of course, the
many miracles that Mother Nature has to offer.

Planet Earth

It has provided us with the many necessities
in life that we sometimes take for granted and
this shouldn't even be, because in life, it's
all about giving and taking, right?

Life...

April 22nd is the day where we stand up for a cause,
to save our planet from the clutches of environmental
disdain and be the voices of the lands, the trees and
the winds that wish to be heard. They've been here
for us and it's about time we did the same.

Hope...

NOT CONVINCED?

Come experience the beauty and magnificence
that is our Planet Earth and perhaps you’ll find
a reason to start caring about her and be a
part of this environmental crusade!

---------------------------------------------

WATCH THIS!

Words simply can't describe the beauty of
our planet? All that can vanish if we don't
start showing care for the environment!

---------------------------------------------

MOVE IT, MOVE IT!

It's time to be part of the solution. Let's stop
talking about saving our planet and instead,
let's take action and do someting about it!

Take Action

It is a personal oath that you undertake upon
yourself. Be it taking more public transportation,
switching off your computer when not in use or even
promoting a cause, just do it, and do it with your heart.

---------------------------------------------

BE THE SOLUTION!

Remember, Earth Day isn't just today,
it's everyday. Move off that couch guys and
do something worthwhile for once! ;)

I've made my pledge, have you?

Hailing Singapore

WE ALL KNOW

The weather around the world has been getting
wackier with each passing day. Snow in the Sahara
and a heatwave in Winter? Totally Absurd!

Snow In The Desert

Even Singapore hasn't been spared with any
normalcy with thunderstorms battering down on
us daily at the most unusual time of the year.

The Perfect Storm

The other week, Singapore’s weather dipped
to a record low of 21 degrees celsius. Brr!

Read on to find out how wacky things can get!

-------------------------------------------

DID YOU KNOW?

In March, Singapore was hit by a hail storm.
YES! A bloody hail storm! Unbelievable.

Hail Storm

This peculiar phenomenon occurred around
3:00 PM local time and if you didn't know, a hail
storm is just like rain, only that hail-like stones or
frozen ice pellets come raining down on you.

Hail Stones

If you happened to be in Bishan, Toa Payoh
or Ang Mo Kio at that time, you would probably
experience this peculiar event. Residents were
bombared with hail the size of 5 cent coins.

The Heartlands

With such wacky weather, i've literally
stopped watching the weather channel,
because they're only accurate half the time!

Cats And Dogs

You simply cannot imagine what will start to fall
from the sky next. Cats and dogs perhaps?

Breaking Up The Ice

NEWS FLASH!

NEWS FLASH!

A chunk of ice the size of the Isle of Man has
started to break away from Antarctica in what
scientists say is evidence of warming climate.

The Wilkins Ice Shelf

Satellite images suggest that part of the ice shelf
is disintegrating, and will soon crumble away.

Satellite Image

The Wilkins Ice Shelf has been
stable for most of the last century,
but began retreating in the 1990s.

Breaking Away

Here is a recorded telecast fresh
from BCC reporting the incident.

Don't worry, sea levels won't rise,

In 60 Minutes

CAN YOU FEEL IT?

The world has felt the effects of climate
change, from soaring temperatures to
the unpredictable weather elements.

Red Earth

With the devastation that it has unleashed
upon Mother Earth in recent years, what
can one person do about climate change?

---------------------------------------

DID YOU KNOW?

Last year, on March 31st, for exactly an hour,
Sydney made a powerful statement to challenge
global warming, by turning off its lights.

Lights Out In Sydney

This was known as EARTH HOUR.

Created to take a stand against the greatest
threat our planet has ever faced, Earth Hour
uses the simple action of turning off the lights for
one hour to deliver a powerful message about
the need for action on global warming.

A Global Warning

Over 2.2 million Sydney residents and over
2,100 businesses participated in the event and
electricity consumption was claimed to have
been reduced by 10.2% for that hour.

---------------------------------------

60 MINUTES

What began as one city taking a stand against
global warming caught the attention of the
world, and all it took was just sixty minutes.

60 Minutes

This year, 24 global cities will participate
in Earth Hour at 8pm on March 29.

So, what's the significance of it?

"Earth Hour is the highlight of a campaign to encourage
businesses, communities and individuals to take the
simple steps needed to cut their emissions on an ongoing
basis. It is about simple changes that will collectively
make a difference – from businesses turning off their
lights when their offices are empty, to homes turning
off appliances rather than leaving them on."

---------------------------------------

WATCH THIS!

---------------------------------------

AND, SO!

What are you waiting for?

This is the opportunity for you to do your part
to challenge climate change, take the chance!

Resolving Global Warming

All it takes is just 60 minutes.

Environmental Friendliness

Campaigns to raise awareness towards the need to care for the environment is just a little gentle reminder that....

WE HAVE TO SAVE THE PLANET
We're living on, damn it!!!

It is easy to care for the environment, seriously!

All we have to do is to just make LITTLE efforts here and there
to our individual daily lifestyles!

And I'm not talking about going psycho fanatic with the 3Rs concept. It's about how we (as homosapiens who are occupying this little space called Earth) can just play a part in caring for the environment.

Instead of throwing your rubbish into one dustbin when you're out and about town. Use the recycling bins and throw in your crap according to the different types:

plastic, glass, and paper.

Instead of throwing your clothes and books away,
give it to the salvation army.

Instead of throwing your newspaper and magazines away,
give it or sell it to the garang guni man.
(hello?? you get a chance to earn money even as you're saving the Earth!!)

Split your home rubbish into: Glass, Plastic, Metal and Paper.

It's just that simple.

Caring for the environment is not rocket science,
anyone can do it.

Just stop being so lazy. Get off your arses and start doing something about it!

Instead of complaining and whining like a big baby that the ozone layer is disappearing and the weather is getting harsher each year...

DO something!

Just Do It.
